Cross Connect is a bible and bible commentary reader based on the (the sword project) bible database that has over 160 bibles and documents in over 50 languages. This includes a connection to the cross-wire server to retrieve bibles from. This is a multi-window application where you can see several bibles at a time and compare bibles and notes as well as keeping a history of what you do and bookmarking interesting verses. You can add your own personal notes to each verse. Advanced searching is included as well. You can SMS or Email Bible verses to your friends and loved ones. Advanced features include Ancient Greek and Hebrew word translations as well as morphology. There are several Bible reading plans that span from 30 days to one year with many different methods for covering the Bible. All texts appearing in the program are translated into over 40 languages. If you get tired of reading the bible then you can listen to it instead by choosing one of the many audio versions of the bible.  Google translations are integrated into most windows so if you study in a language you don’t fully understand you can usually translate it to your language.

Cross Connect is open-source with the GNU General Public License.  The source code is available at

I want to tell you about how I came to write this program. I have been using and helping others develop bible reading programs for about 3 years. Then I was offered a nice mobile phone if I would write a program for WP7(Window Phone 7).  Of course I immediately knew that I wanted to write a bible reader program for cross-wire bibles. But I was hesitant because I knew it was a huge job and a mobile phone would in no way be a decent compensation. So basically it was something I really wanted to do anyway.

I started working trying to convert huge Sword libraries to CSharp which would be the backbone of this program.  I worked about 3 weeks and was getting nowhere. Because I also have a full time job I was getting to a point of exhaustion and I realized I was no closer to getting the program done then when I started.  I prayed to God and asked him to help me to get this program done because at this point I was very near to being forced to give up.  I told God that this was something I really wanted to do but if he didn’t help me I would be forced to quit.

The next day I woke up and had a crazy idea in my head. The idea was that I would throw away all the work I did on converting the sword libraries and write everything myself.  Any programmer knows that this is insane because the sword libraries represent years of work and I was going to simply re-write it all myself from the beginning.  But I followed my instincts and within 5 hours I had managed write a program that could read and properly display cross-wire bibles.  In 5 hours I managed to do what takes most people many months or years to do. I feel that God blessed me because I would never have come up with such a crazy idea myself and in those 5 hours I was constantly making all the right choices about what to do. Just by looking at binary files I immediately knew what algorithms I needed to write to get the job done.

I am not trying to say that this program is a work of God. I am trying to say that God blessed me when I asked him to help me and that he hears our prayers and will help us in any venture that we want. Of course, He helps us only with our ventures that He in his divine wisdom decides is right for us. I just want to thank God with all my heart for showing me once again that he does hear us and he does answer our prayers.  Just that experience in itself is more important to me than any computer program.

“And I tell you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” RSV – Luke 11:9-13

wow that is great! I will try it and then let you know if I cant accomplish the task! This really is such a huge blessing to me! My pastor wanted to come to WP8 from android but he has a lot of stuff on e-sword and olive tree neither of which we thought could be used on wp8. When I showed him cross connect and that I knew you could put e-sword modules in it he went out and got a wp8. Now i just have to figure this out for him and myself so again thank you so much and god bless!

I would be taken to various chapter in Exodus and Genesis. Some of the books are: Phlm,2John, 3John, Jude, Obad

Thank you so much for finding this bug. I have now fixed it and submitted the update to Microsoft. It will take them up to a week to release this update to fix this problem.

I’ve been reviewing all of the WP8 bible apps and really like this one over all of the others – especially for reading the bible and using Strong’s numbers. One request though, is it possible to buy versions of the Bible not in the download list? (NKJV for example) – thanks

    • admin says:

The organization are the ones who make most of the bibles for CrossConnect and I know they have tried for years to get the NKJV paid or unpaid but they have always been refused by the owners of NKJV. But when you download bibles in CrossConnect look at all the servers. Not just the first one “CrossWire”. I believe you might find it in the last server “custom bible download address”.

Is it possible to download the Afrikaans Audio Bible on to my Lumia 520, Windows 8 Phone, instaed of listening to the audio Bible on-line.

    • admin says:

Yes, it is. But you can’t do it through Cross-Connect. You need to do it manually yourself as mp3 files. Search on google for “audio bible afrikaans” and you will get links to download the bibles from. seemed like a good one. I know that this is not ideal but understand that most audio bibles are between 1 and 2 Gigabytes large and therefore difficult to manage on a phone.

My friend this is me again…
now switched to a windows 8 phone and got to try Cross-Connect on phone compare to tablet/pc. One question…Can you implement screen lock disabling while reading or listening thru TTS. That would be nice. I either have to disable it which is pain to remember to re-enable it after. Thank you much.

Hi I have a HTC windows phone 7.8 phone can’t connect to the cross wore server I keep getting error message,it says values does fall into expected range can you please tell me how I can fix this problem thank you.

    • admin says:

Sorry about that. I know what the problem is but I don’t think I can fix it for the Windows Phone 7 . What I can do is to add another download site which is a copy of the crosswire site. Please select the server “Crosswire Copy”. Then let me know if it works.

  10. Zeffer says:

Please make way for Windows Phone 8.1 to import e-Sword module (Biblia .zip files), just as in Windows 10. It would be very important! The answer thank you very much!

    • admin says:

Ok. I agree. I’ll do it immediately. But right now I can’t submit new versions of the windows 8.1 version due to problems microsoft is having. But as soon as it is possible I will submit it. But it will only work with OneDrive..

  11. Zeffer says:

Thank you for answering, but I do not see how you can import a module sword. If you give an e-mail address will be sent to you in the Bible module to put it into the CrossWire database. Thank you very much! God bless you!

  12. Zeffer says:

Thank you, works very well, it’s the best Bible software! God bless you for this work! And do not stop the development!

Hi, is there a way to manually add self made book modules to the wp8.1 app?

  15. AN says:

I wonder if it could be possible to fix the font in the Finnish translation as described in the “Bugs” section comment as of “December 20, 2014 at 7:30 pm”

  16. Brian Howe says:

    Hello 🙂
Please could you say which language the program is written in (I see the Windows 10 SDK is for C# or C#.NET)?
I’m asking because the Dictionaries system is a bit “flaky” and I want to look to see how it works. Mine (on Lumia 950XL) opens the indexing window without fail BUT
    1) it sometimes has the search symbol, sometimes not;
    2) it sometimes opens the second window (the results window), sometimes not!
When the search-symbol is there, it will find/present the searched for index-number BUT not give the result in the second window (if it’s there!)
When the search-symbol is NOT there, if I manually scroll down the index-numbers screen then click on a number, the result WILL appear in the results window!
